The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is a government-recommended training program designed to improve the knowledge and skills of health and social care staff in supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic individuals. It is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, who tragically passed away due to a lack of understanding of his needs. The training is mandatory for registered providers under the Health and Care Act 2022, and is delivered in two tiers, with a free e-learning module as the first part for both tiers.
It comes as no surprise that, as a team of learning disability nurses and experts with lived experience, we are deeply passionate about the Oliver McGowan Training Programme. Our team brings extensive experience from across NHS services, including community learning disability teams and acute liaison roles. Through these roles, it has long been clear that mandatory training in learning disability and autism is essential. This training plays a vital role in reducing health inequalities, preventing avoidable and premature deaths, and fostering more inclusive and informed health and social care teams. We have already trained over 6500 staff in Tier 2 sessions and 1500 staff in Tier 1 sessions across various settings. This includes primary care, acute hospitals, community services, social care and private providers. We pride ourselves on the exceptional feedback that we receive consistently about both the training and the changes that this has made in practice areas.
We recognise that accessibility to this training is key and we are committed to offering our programmes as competitively priced as possible. As a small, close-knit team, we are able to achieve this by maximising resources—such as shared transport within trio's and collective supervision—and by ensuring that our training trios are supported not only by facilitator-trainers but also through collaborative planning and delivery. This approach fosters positive, trusting relationships within the team and contributes to a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture. Please contact us directly for a bespoke quote
